this is one of my favourite matisse's . such strong colour it looks like pure pigment squeezed onto the four corners that meet in the middle. i get a real sense of japonism in this piece with the figure taking up the whole picture plane not answering the complimentary colours on the sides. also the stylisation of his wife's face has Japanese features, it even looks like she could be wearing a kimono. any way the powerful high-key colour and beautiful simplification of the figure is what was important stylistic characteristics of both Matisse and Fauvism

1909 to 1911 bathers at moritzburg

this is ernst ludwig kirchner, one of my favourite artists from one of my favourite art movements. Die brucke was formed by a few architecture students turned anti-establishment radicals, presenting totally avant-garde ideas about art. this picture is called bathers at moritzburg. it shows Die Brucke and there friends on one of there trips to moritzburg which is somewhere in the German countryside so they can get away from all the hookers and grossness of industrialized Berlin.

i love egon schiele and i LOVE this piece. it's so personal and intimate and although she pulled an "ugly" face it's painted with such endearment and so romantically. idk maybe i think its romantic because im listening to some sweet leonard cohen songs hahaah. anyway it's an awesome painting
