TIMELINE HOMEWORK - ART 1935-1940 BY MAHA

1937 METAMORPHOSIS OF NARRCISSUS
OIL ON CANVAS BY SPANISH ARTIST SALVADOR DALI

Based on a Greek myth about an angel named Narrcissus who came to earth one day saw his reflection in a pool of water and instantly fell madly in love with himself. To the point that his own self obbsession meant that he couldnt do anything lest he should look away this in turn eventually caused him to die of starvation.

On the left half of the painting we see the figure of Narrcissus gazing upon his reflection in the water colours are lively like a sunrise and Dalis portrayal of the water creates a mirror.
On the right hand side the figure of Narrcissus is transformed two fold firstly the figure has become lifeless almost stonelike and secondly Dali has magically transformed the figure into a hand holding an egg ( the egg is a sexual reference used in other Dali paintings)and out of the egg a flower hatches ( the gods felt pity and gave Narrcissus a flower in rememberance).
In the for right hand corner on the horizon is a 3rd Narrcissus figure I believe it was Dali's way of saying self obbsession may be more common than we think.

1938 TIME TRANSFIXED (Ongoing time stabbed by a dagger)

OIL ON CANVAS BY BELGIAN ARTIST RENE MAGRITTE

Depicts a locomotive train bursting out of a fire place at full speed .The mirror reflects a barren room and a mysteriuos candlestick has no reflection.

Margitte has created a mystery with the train were is it going? to be solved on the backdrop of an unremarkable boring everyday living room fire place.

He mentions he wants people to be prodded by the train as they walk past a bit cheeky.

Thanks Maha,

Only 2, not 3 images that you commented on, but you did so in a lot of depth, so good work, I enjoyed your "unpacking" of the images.

Cheers,
